Is Acupuncture Really a Threat to the Established Medical Model?

Reading some of the scathing criticisms of acupuncture and it is affects in relieving pain and other debilitating conditions would have some believe the established medical order is out to smear acupuncturists as frauds and scam artists. It would be understandable if acupuncturists went around bad-mouthing modern medicine and surgery but most acupuncturists stress that their practice is an adjunct therapy and should not be used in place of traditional medical treatments. Yet every week a new story appears that refers to acupuncture as a sham and that there is no evidence to support it works as a pain relieving therapy.

Regardless of whether you believe in the healing power of acupuncture, it is interesting that some doctors feel the need to belittle the practice to such a degree. Some float the theory that no matter how small a fringe community acupuncturists are, some doctors still view the practice as a threat to theirs and make a consistent effort to undermine the practice of inserting fine needles into specific points on the human body to relieve pain, stress, anxiety and other ailments. While not all doctors are dismissive of acupuncture, in fact some even suggest their patients may want to try it in conjunction with other remedies including surgery and medications, enough are vehemently opposed to even discussing the practice to ask if there may be an underlying reason for their stance.

Alternative medicine or holistic healing is nothing new. In fact it pre-dates modern medicine by centuries and though millions of research dollars have been spent trying to quantify and qualify the practice in scientific terms it has yet to produce any definitive results. However, this doesn’t mean acupuncture doesn’t work only that scientists can’t explain why it would or how it could work. Yet every year thousands of patients undergo acupuncture treatment and claim to feel better after their treatment. Acupuncture is practiced all over the world and is still very much a part of Chinese culture, where it first originated thousands of years ago.

If an acupuncturist is claiming that fine needles are all you need to eliminate cancer, cure an infectious disease of relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety then it would be understandable for ethical doctors to step up and counter these false claims. However, very few acupuncturists ever make these claims and most are up front about their practice being an adjunct therapy and that patients should never rule out modern medicine. Trying to frighten people into thinking acupuncture is a folklore witch doctor voodoo spell is simply a scare tactic that more often stokes curiosity instead of fear. The day when acupuncture replaces doctors and hospitals is certainly not around the corner.

However, patients have the right to try holistic and alternative therapies if they choose and as long as the acupuncturist is practicing with sterile needles and performing the procedure properly there is little risk of harm and the chance that this mystery therapy just may work.

Treating Whiplash with Chiropractic Visits

Each whiplash case is different and for that reason it is difficult to summarize chiropractic treatments for whiplash. However it is possible to provide a short description of the five most common procedures used by chiropractors to treat whiplash. Your chiropractor may use any one of these procedures, or a combination of them, to treat your whiplash. Your chiropractor may also give you a referral to another medical specialist if he or she believes you need it. Your chiropractor will decide which procedures to use based on the main problems discovered during your first examination. Depending upon the severity of your whiplash, you may require multiple visits to your chiropractor

The first treatment is spinal manipulation. This is often the first choice by a chiropractor for joint issues. It realigns the spinal joints and allows the joints to regain their natural range of movement. This is often accomplished by gently rotating the patient’s head in the direction of joint stress or dysfunction. After a few rotations, your chiropractor will use either a quick thrust or a slow, steady movement to realign the joints. Some chiropractors prefer the slow, steady movement for nervous or first-time patients.

Most chiropractors use muscle stimulation or relaxation techniques to treat the muscle problems associated with whiplash injuries. For example, if your muscle appears to be weak, your chiropractor will stimulate the muscle to encourage contractions. If you have the opposite problem, your muscles are too tense, your chiropractor will help stretch the muscle to relieve the tension. The intensity of the stretches depends on how tight your muscle is, tighter muscles require more intense stretches. In many cases, these stretches may be painful. If this is the case, your chiropractor may apply pressure to trigger points to relieve your pain.

Once your spine has been successfully realigned, your chiropractor may provide you with specific exercises to help reduce the chance of your discs becoming misaligned again. These exercises are called McKenzie exercises. Your chiropractor will initially show you how to do these exercises in his or her office, then give you instructions on how to do them at home. These were designed to be easy for patients who want to take an active role in treating their whiplash.

Another type of exercise that may be assigned to you is stabilization exercises, or sensorimotor exercises. These exercises are designed to train the nervous system to better coordinate and improve movement patterns for everyday activities. They can also increase the strength of your neck muscles, which improves the stability of your neck. These exercises can be used in a variety of whiplash injuries, ranging from minor trauma as a result of playing sports to major trauma from a car accident or a fall.

Another treatment for whiplash is most appropriate after your body has healed and is more for preventing whiplash than treating your current injury. This treatment is lifestyle and ergonomic advice for performing everyday activities with very little stress on your body. This advice takes into account your job, your hobbies and home projects that can irritate your whiplash injury. Your chiropractor will give you advice on how to accomplish daily activities without putting unneeded stress on your body.

How to Pick the Right Size When Buying Cheap Shoes Online

You can find a lot of great deals on cheap shoes online but sometimes it can be hard to determine what size to purchase. You can eliminate this problem by visiting a store in your area and trying on a similar pair of shoes to see what size fits best. You don’t have to find the exact style of shoe but if you can find another shoe made by the same brand that usually works just as well.

For example, if you find a pair of Skecher shoes online that you really like for a great price simply go to a shop that has Skechers and try them on. This will give you a pretty good idea of what size to order. If you read some of the shoe reviews online a lot of people will mention if they think the shoes run small or big. Of course, everybody has different feet so it’s really best to try them on in person if you can afford the time to make an extra stop during your daily errands.

If you do end up trying on shoes be sure to stop later in the day. As the day goes on your feet swell making them larger in size than they would be in the morning or early afternoon hours. If you try on shoes too early you may end up purchasing a pair that feels too small. You also want to make sure you try on the shoes with the same of type of socks you’ll be wearing with the shoes. For instance, you wouldn’t want to wear athletic socks with dress shoes or nylons with a pair of winter boots.

Also, if for some reason you can’t find a pair of shoes that feel comfortable you may want to try insoles, shoe inserts or orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts that are custom-made for your feet. These special inserts are designed to keep your feet from feeling tired if you walk long distances or stand for long periods of time. They are popular with people who have to work long hours on their feet such as nurses and waitstaff. You may also need to get special inserts or insoles for dress shoes because they typically come with less cushion than running or athletic-type shoes.

The shoes should feel comfortable as soon as you put them on. Don’t think you need to spend several days or weeks to break them in. Athletic shoes should allow your feet to breathe as the many sweat glands in your feet will cause a lot of distress to you and everyone else in the room when you take off your shoes. For some kinds of shoes you might need to choose fashion over comfort and vice versa. Keep in mind how much time you’ll be spending on your feet and for what purpose and this will help you make a decision on what type of shoe is best.

Tapotement – Why it Should Be Included in Every Swedish Massage

This comes from the French word tapoter, meaning to ‘tap’ and is exactly that, a tapping or percussive technique which is a quick, choppy method that has a toning effect on the body. It is very much like playing a drum, performed with the sides or tips of the fingers with alternate hands going up and down.

This massage stroke is practiced by keeping your wrists loose and your movements gentle and bouncy to avoid hurting your partner. A common mistake when learning this stroke is to use your elbows and shoulders which causes frustration for both therapist and receiver.

Tapotement is used on the head, upper back and shoulders, stimulating the blood circulation and the nervous system. It is a stimulating and an invigorating experience, but there are some people who find that this part of the Swedish massage program is too much for them.

Other benefits of the different tapotement strokes are that they reduce fatty deposits and flabby muscle found mainly on the thigh and buttocks areas. If you use gentle percussion strokes on the abdomen conditions like constipation are helped.

There are several different strategies used when applying Tapotement which can be summarized as follows:

• Hacking (or ‘chopping’) is an action where you use the sides of your hands in what would commonly be recognized as a karate chop motion. With your palms facing one another, you tap the surface of your partner’s skin relatively gently whilst moving rapidly across the surface to prevent damage and pain.

• Flicking is a lighter, soft form of hacking. This movement is performed by the sides of the little fingers only and not the edge of the hand.

• Cupping is a technique where you form each hand into a cup by bending your fingers only at the lower knuckle joint whilst keeping your thumb close to the side of your hand. With your hand forming the cup shape, you tap the skin surface whilst moving across it in a rapid succession of movements. Always make sure your hands are cupped and not flat to avoid smacking your partner. When performed on the back area the mucus on the lungs loosens giving relief to the receiver.

• Pummeling: In this final Tapotement technique, you clench your hands into a loose fist before applying them in rapid succession of gentle blows to the surface of your partners skin, most commonly that of the thighs and buttocks.

Always remember Tapotement or percussion movements are always performed on fleshy muscular regions and not on bony or sensive areas of the body. Eg: shins neck, back of knee, bruises or broken veins.

As a result of tapotement being part of your massage, your muscles are stimulated and strengthened inducing muscle tone, blood circulation and nervous system improved.

Whiplash Symptoms From Sneezing?

Most people have heard of whiplash and think of it as something that is caused in a car accident. And while that is true, there are also other causes of whiplash including a previous neck injury, sport related falls, being pushed or a bad fall.

Even an intense sneeze can result in whiplash!

That’s why it’s important to know the signs of whiplash which may include:

  • A sudden feeling of stiffness or soreness in the neck
  • Pain between shoulders
  • Difficulty in turning the head from side to side

Because of the pain associated with whiplash, along with the potential for further complication, it’s important to consult with a chiropractor following any injury. Any sudden stop of an individual’s body that forcefully snaps their head and neck forward, backwards, or sideways can severely injure their neck’s soft tissues, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves, as well as the vertebrae.

In a whiplash injury, supportive soft tissues in the neck are often over-stretched or torn and spinal joints can become misaligned. Misaligned vertebrae, or subluxations, can cause the nerve roots and blood vessels in an individual’s neck to become compressed, stretched or irritated. This can interfere with nerve transmission and blood supply to vital body functions.

In addition, the normal curve of the cervical spine is altered and joint motion becomes restricted. As a result, weakened tissues are no longer able to support the vertebrae in its proper position.

Over time, if these subluxations are left untreated, they can cause many health problems such as headaches, backaches, neckpain, arthritis, heart problems, and many others. There is simply no end to the health conditions that can result from a pinched or blocked nerve. Consider this, if the nerve from your brain to your heart was cut the result would be fatal. What if the nerve was pinched or squeezed? What would the result be?

This is why consulting with a chiropractor is so important. Individualized chiropractic adjustments not only can relieve initial pain from an injury, they can also help in the restoration of healthy spinal joint function to prevent future problems.

Because chiropractors are extensively trained, they can help with:

  1. Removal of nerve interference
  2. Breaking down scar tissue from previous injuries
  3. Increasing circulation to enhance healing
  4. Reducing inflammation

Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments can eliminate or reduce joint pain and restore normal range of motion to specific areas of injury. An Australian study points to the pain associated with whiplash and shows how a chiropractor can help with such situations. The 10-year study found that:

  • Facet joint pain is the definitive cause of chronic head and neck pain in 60 percent of whiplash cases studied
  • 87 percent of patients exhibited a limited range of cervical motion. The two findings suggest that many whiplash injuries respond well to chiropractic care because adjustments are specifically directed at facet joints
  • Case studies have also shown that chiropractic adjustments can eliminate or reduce joint pain and restore range of motion

There’s Help for Those Battling Plantar Fasciitis

When the simple task of walking is hindered by a persistent, intense pain radiating from the bottom of the foot, the culprit is oftentimes a condition known as plantar fasciitis.

It’s a common ailment, affecting an estimated 2 million patients in the United States each year and it’s much more than simply dealing with a little foot pain. The pain can be severe enough to hobble an individual, negatively impacting his or her quality of life, especially if he or she is normally active. It can appear in one foot or both feet. It affects anyone, from professional athletes like Albert Pujols (baseball), Pau Gasol (basketball) and Antonio Gates (football), to weekend warriors and everyday people.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia – the bow-like tissue on the bottom of the foot – is damaged or torn resulting in inflammation, pain and stiffness. Continued physical activity and prolonged weight bearing can cause further aggravation. While damage to the plantar fascia can lead to plantar fasciitis, the ailment can actually develop without reason. There are, however, factors that can make an individual more prone to the condition including:

• Age (the elderly are more at risk for foot ailments)
• Tighter calf muscles that make it difficult to flex the foot
• Weight gain/obesity
• Pregnancy
• Gender (women are more prone than men)
• Possessing a very high arch
• Repetitive impact activity (running/sports/high-impact aerobic exercise, etc.)
• New or increased activity
• Improper footwear

The symptoms of plantar fasciitis clearly distinguish it from simple foot pain. The most common complaint from plantar fasciitis is a burning, piercing, or aching pain in the heel that lasts for about 30 days or longer. It also features increased pain in the morning or after extended periods of sitting. Fortunately for most sufferers, the accompanying stiffness and pain tends to loosen throughout the day.

There are a variety of treatments, surgical and non-surgical, available to help ease the pain and frustration of this aggravating foot ailment. Those treatments include the use of anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen and/or Aleve or utilizing custom-made orthotic devices, boots, braces or splints that provide support for the foot.

Rest, icing and stretching exercises at home are also recommended. If those tactics don’t provide favorable results and some measure of relief, there are surgical options that remove or release the affected portion of the tissue responsible for the pain. Most people will be able to return to normal function a few weeks after surgery.
